Deputy PM Demeke Mekonnen Says GERD Construction Reaching Decisive Stage

Addis Ababa, April 1, 2013 –(WIC)– Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Demeke Mekonnen said on Saturday the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) started by the Great Leader Meles Zenawi would be realized by public participation.

Demeke, who is also the president of the National Council for Public Coordination of the construction of the Renaissance Dam, made the remark at sports event held at Addis Ababa Stadium in connection with the 2nd anniversary of the commencement of GERD construction.

“Two years ago, they were wondering whether we would begin [the construction], and we have shown them that we have begun; the question now is whether we will finalize. As they have witnessed that we have begun, they shall also realize that we will finalize it recently.”

Demeke said the construction of the Dam has now reached a decisive stage and stressed the need to strengthen the all-rounded support by the public.

The anniversary is a one on which the government and the public shall renew their joint commitment to realize the Growth and Transformation Plan and the construction of GERD, he said.

On the occasion, the renowned athlete Haile Gebresellassie said the current generation should make history by finalizing the construction of GERD.

In a football match between actors and singers that happened on the event, actors beaten singers by 4 goals to 3. The day also saw other entertaining sports events including famous athletes’ race with their spouses and a football match between Ethiopian Coffee and Arba Minch City clubs.

The 2nd anniversary of the commencement of GERD construction is underway with a theme: Meles, your word would be observed; the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam shall be realized with public participation.”
