Ethiopia: 7th Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day to be Celebrated in Memory of the Late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi

Addis Ababa, October 22, 2012 — (WIC) — The House of Federation (HoF) said it has decided to celebrate the 7th Nations, Nationalities and People’s Day in memorial to the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

In a press conference he gave here on Sunday, Speaker of HoF, Kassa Tekleberhan said the decision was made by the House as the late Prime Minister devoted his whole life for the equality of nations and nationalities.

He said the Day will be celebrated for a month, starting from 10 November 2012, across the country with various assortments.

Kassa said the Day marks the equality between nations, nationalities and people’s, and all religions as well as gender.

This year, the day will be officially celebrated in Bahir Dar town, in Amhara State on 9 December 2012, Kassa said. Representatives from over 80 ethnic groups will gather in Bahir Dar town of Amhara State to show their music, dancing and culture.

The day serves as an important forum for nations, nationalities and people’s to show their culture, know each other and show unity and strong solidarity for peace.

Ethiopia has decided to celebrate Nations, Nationalities and People’s Day on 9 December since 2007, to commemorate the day of the ratification of the Nations’ constitution. (ENA)
